Answers about normalizing IFC models, use cases, pricing, file formats, and how to get clean models from other planners.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is abstractBIM?
abstractBIM is a web-based tool that normalizes IFC models. You upload any architectural BIM file and get clean, consistent geometry back - ready for thermal simulation, quantity takeoff, or data pipelines. No manual remodeling required.
What can I do with abstractBIM?
Use the model you already have - instead of redrawing it manually. abstractBIM normalizes existing IFC data for three main workflows:
- Thermal simulation: export to IDA ICE, EnergyPlus, or Solarcomputer via gbXML
- Quantity takeoff: consistent room areas, wall surfaces, and normalized naming in Excel
- Data pipelines: architectural competitions, benchmarking, and portfolio analysis
How much does it cost?
Thermal simulation is always free. For quantity takeoff and data pipelines, a free trial includes 200 credits (1 credit = 1 IfcSpace). Paid projects are priced at approximately 2.5 CHF per space. For larger projects or recurring pipelines, ask for an offer.
What file formats does abstractBIM support?
Input is IFC. Output is IFC, gbXML, and Excel. No proprietary formats, no vendor lock-in.
How do I export an IFC for abstractBIM?
The model must contain IfcSpaces. Doors and windows are optional.
By software
- Sketchup: IFC Manager plugin
- ArchiCAD: built-in IFC export
- Revit: built-in IFC export
- Vectorworks: built-in IFC export
How can I ensure I receive correct models from other planners?
Specify it in the contract. Require IFC models with IfcSpaces modeled from top of finished floor to bottom of structural ceiling. This single requirement eliminates the most common geometry errors and gives abstractBIM a clean, consistent input to work with.
Are there alternatives to abstractBIM?
The most common alternative is manual cleanup in the authoring tool - Revit, ArchiCAD, or similar. This typically takes 2 to 5 days per model and does not scale across projects.
Does abstractBIM work with Sketchup models?
Yes. Install the IFC Manager plugin, model your spaces as IfcSpaces, and export. abstractBIM handles the rest.
